Several people working for Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) received phishing emails this week as part of a hacking attempt, The Morning Call reports. The emails were flagged by Google, which notified the campaign and told Tommey’s office that the emails came from “actors with ties to a nation-state” who “may be sending exploratory emails.” Steve Kelly, spokesman for Toomey, confirmed the phishing emails but said none of them were sent to the senator’s legislative email account. Toomey is currently not up for re-election, and many of the accounts subject to the attempted hacking were “dormant.” Active account users were told to change their passwords, Kelly told the newspaper. This comes after The Daily Beast reported that Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) was targeted in an unsuccessful Russian hacking attempt. The office of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has also been a target of phishing emails.
