Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Traditionally, cemeteries are celebrated in autumn, but spring is really the best season in which to appreciate them. Once the snows have melted, cemeteries come to life, full of flowering trees, singing birds, and drifts of daffodils and violets. Although every cemetery has charms to greet the visitor in the spring, here are 10 of America’s most beautiful cemeteries.
The site of America’s first garden cemetery was selected for its loveliness. Designed by the foremost botanist of his day, Mount Auburn incorporates forsythia, dogwood, centuries-old flowering fruit trees, magnolias, and other jaw-dropping specimens from around the world. Migrating songbirds fill their branches as soon as the weather turns.
