Under the water on the hip resort of Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi exists the world’s first semi-submerged art gallery. The Sculpture Coralarium features a selection of sculptures and a oral pathway with over 60 coral flower pots. This massive coral lagoon was developed by the celebrated environmental sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.
The installation aims to create a direct pathway to the ocean. The building entrance is positioned above the water and directs viewers into elevated viewing platform that sits above water. The exhibition showcases 14 sculptures on plinths at various heights within in the water column. The sculptures are hybrid forms, part-human, part-plant, and part-coral. Several pieces of work feature root systems which represent the dependence of humans on the natural environment.
