President Donald Trump said on Friday afternoon that Defense Secretary James Mattis can override him when it comes to whether the U.S. will employ torture and enhanced interrogation tactics. Mattis has said he opposes torture, while Trump repeated in recent days his belief that torture “absolutely” works. “I don’t necessarily agree [with Mattis] but I would tell you that he will override because I’m giving him that power,” Trump said at the White House, standing alongside British Prime Minister Theresa May. “He’s an expert. He’s highly respected. He’s the general’s general. He got through the Senate very, very quickly—which, in this country is not easy.” Trump declared that the U.S. will “win with or without” enhanced interrogation techniques.
