The youngest transgender woman to be killed in 2018 to date was 18-year-old Vontashia Bell. She was fatally shot in Shreveport, Louisiana, early on the morning on Aug. 30, according to an initial report from the Shreveport Times, which misgendered the victim. As Into reported, details about Bell are sparse but Rebecca Norris, the president of Louisiana Transgender Advocates Shreveport, told the outlet that Bell was indeed transgender and had recently “come back out” after going “back in the closet for quite a while.” Seeming to confirm that narrative—as Into noted—was an Aug. 11 Facebook post from Bell that read, “Feel like being my old self again” and “Just wait until next month going had Vontashia back in business and in style.”
