Behar Mocks Glenn Beck’s Addiction to Alcohol, Publicity
You don’t expect them to be friends, do you? Comedienne Joy Behar was on Reliable Sources talking about her upcoming show, called Headline News, when Howard Kurtz brought up Glenn Beck’s recent appearance on the cover of Time magazine. “He's addicted to all of that publicity, I think. It took the place of drinking,” Behar says.
The Vast, Right-Wing Conspiracy Lives On?
You wouldn’t expect a Clinton to advance the “vast, right-wing conspiracy” theory after Hillary was roundly mocked for bringing it up in the first place. But Bill Clinton, interviewed in Pittsburgh by David Gregory on Meet the Press, did exactly that. Clinton said the right wing is targeting Obama much as he was targeted, though—and is this a bit of ego talking?—things were far worse for Democrats in the 1990s than they are now.
Close Gitmo on Jan. 22? Probably Not
Remember that January 22, 2010, deadline President Obama set for closing the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay? Defense Secretary Robert Gates sure does, but as he tells George Stephanopoulos on This Week, that date was set apparently for motivational purposes only. “I know enough from being around this town that if you don't put a deadline on something, you'll never move the bureaucracy,” Gates says. True enough, but didn’t that promise help elect a president?
McDonnell: Women Should, in Fact, Be Allowed to Work
As Anita Kumar writes in The Washington Post, Chris Wallace may host a show on Fox News, but that doesn’t mean he goes easy on Republicans. On Fox News Sunday, Wallace presses Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, who, Wallace points out, was ahead in the polls until it was revealed that his 1989 master's thesis argued against the legalization of birth control for married couples and criticized the “new trend of working women and feminism.” McDonnell, a Republican who served as Virginia's attorney general, says some of his views have changed over time—especially the ones about women working.
Defiant Paterson Says He’s Running in 2010
A recent Marist poll shows Gov. David Paterson with approval rating among New Yorkers of 17 percent. The White House reportedly reached out and asked him not to run for re-election. Paterson’s reaction? “I am running for governor in 2010,” he tells David Gregory on Meet the Press.
Hillary Clinton Demands Action from Iran
Hillary Clinton suggested further sanctions are in Iran’s future if its leaders don’t allow inspectors to determine how its nuclear power facilities are being used. If those facilities—including a recently disclosed uranium-enrichment site—are indeed only there to provide electricity, then “prove it,” Clinton tells Harry Smith on Face the Nation. “Don't assert it, prove it.”
Qaddafi: Greeting for Lockerbie Bomber Was “Normal”
In his first U.S. television interview since 2005, Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi wrapped up a busy week by telling Fareed Zakaria that he met with the families of victims of the Lockerbie bombing, and calling the attack “a tragedy, a catastrophe.” So far, so good, right? But Qaddafi goes on to defend his festive greeting of Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, one of the Lockerbie bombers, calling the celebration for the convicted terrorist “normal.”
