Sybil Crawley, ‘Downton Abbey’

Team Sybil forever. The youngest Crawley sister, known for her sweet nature and her scandalous elopement with former chauffeur Tom Branson, succumbed to complications from childbirth during the third season’s fourth episode. Besides some ominous signs earlier in the season—her husband being banished from Ireland, her plea for “peace” before their baby’s birth—Sybil’s death seemed to come completely out of, well, the British equivalent of left field. Always healthy, Sybil was only 24 years old. While the family had been warned by the trusty village M.D., Dr. Clarkson, of impending doom for Sybil, they were still shocked when she collapsed into deadly seizures from eclampsia after giving birth. Even more shocked: the Downton Abbey staff, who gathered in the kitchen to hear the news while still in their pajamas, and the seemingly heartless (except when it comes to Jimmy, the handsome new footman) Thomas ran out of the room sobbing. The feelings of the whole viewing audience could be summed up by what the always-stoic dowager countess told Carson: “We’ve seen some troubles, you and I—nothing is worse than this.”
