After Brett Ratner was fired as coproducer of the 84th Academy Awards in February—and replaced by Brian Grazer—his Tower Heist star, Eddie Murphy, decided to follow his pal out the door, stepping down as host of the ceremony. The inimitable Billy Crystal, who had openly campaigned for the job this year, quickly replaced Murphy as host. This will be Crystal’s ninth time hosting the Oscars—second only to Bob Hope’s 18—including the 1998 telecast featuring Titanic that received a whopping 57.25 million viewers, the highest ratings in Oscar history.
