'Generic Republican' is Not Enough

The Hill reports that Senator John Thune is on Romney's VP short list.
The last time John Thune was in the news was when there was speculation he would seek the Presidential nomination. In early 2011, there was a joke circulating around the FrumForum offices about Thune's appeal: the most popular Republican candidate on the ballot was "Generic Republican" and John Thune was the most Generic Republican you could find.
So is "Generic Republican" still popular in 2012? Fewer polling firms are testing the phrase out at the Presidential level since we know who the candidates will be but the Genetic Ballot is still used at the congressional level.
At that level, the Real Clear Politics average of the generic ballot shows a tie. Clearly, generic isn't good enough.
