Rick Santorum, Rudy Giuliani, Robert Gibbs, and More Sunday Talk

Rick Santorum says Joe Biden played the ‘race card,’ Rudy Giuliani questions the vice president’s ‘mental capacity,’ Robert Gibbs defends Obama’s cuts to Medicare, and more in this week’s roundup.

Santorum: Biden Played the ‘Race Card’
For Republicans, it’s the gaffe that keeps on giving. On State of the Union, Rick Santorum questioned Pennsylvania-born Joe Biden’s Southern twang during his notorious “chains” comment—and charged the Obama campaign with playing the “race card,” exploiting racial tensions to boost their poll numbers.

Giuliani: Does Biden Have the ‘Mental Capacity’ to Be President?
The Biden backlash continued on Face the Nation, as former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani defended his recent remarks that the vice president may not have the “mental capacity” for the job of commander-in-chief should the need arise, as proven by his “absolutely disgusting appeal to racial sentiment.” Giuliani clarified, however, that he doesn’t think Biden is totally “nuts”—he just needs a little more “balance” in his approach to politics.

Gillespie: Mitt’s Returns Will Emerge
Democrats have long been pushing for Mitt Romney to release his tax returns, but now Fox News is laying on the heat. On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace grilled top Romney adviser Ed Gillespie on when, exactly, the American people can expect to get a fuller picture of the Republican candidate’s finances. While he kept his answer vague, Gillespie hinted: the returns will be revealed. Eventually.

Gibbs: Seniors Love Obama’s Medicare Plan!
Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs isn’t going to let a little report from an independent Medicare actuary change his tune on the virtues of President Obama’s healthcare plan. On Fox News Sunday, Wallace charged that, according to the report, Obama’s proposed $700 billion in Medicare cuts could spell doom for the program, but Gibbs countered: if the president’s initiative is so harmful to seniors, why is it endorsed by the AARP?

Campaign Aide: Tax Faceoff
While both party’s gaffes could provide endless talk fodder, Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden and Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter know that this election is about the economy, stupid. That’s why, on This Week, after only a few perfunctory jabs relating to chains and dogs on roofs of cars, Cutter and Madden got down to discussing how each candidate’s proposed tax policy would affect the middle class. And the winner is?

Ferguson: Obama’s Gotta Go
Would reelecting President Obama be economic suicide? Harvard historian Niall Ferguson stopped by Face the Nation to discuss his Newsweek cover story on the perils of a second term—arguing that a Romney/Ryan ticket is the only path to prosperity.

Gov. O’Malley: Don’t Shoot Hoops with Mitt!
When in doubt, turn to a sports metaphor. On Meet the Press, Democratic Governors Association chairman and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley took aim at Mitt Romney’s complaints that Obama has been casting a negative tone over the election, liking the GOP candidate to a pick-up-game party pooper who is "always fouling, and always crying foul." If only he had made the same point in dressage terms.
