Should Cops Have to Have a Warrant to Read Your Email?

A new bipartisan bill in the House would make it illegal for police to tap into your personal e-mail without first obtaining a warrant. The proposed legislation would also no longer allow warrantless tracking of your cell phone’s location data, which the Obama administration has deemed constitutional (really?).

"Fourth Amendment protections don’t stop at the Internet," [Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA)] said in an e-mailed statement. "Establishing a warrant standard for government access to cloud and geolocation provides Americans with the privacy protections they expect, and would enable service providers to foster greater trust with their users and international trading partners."
