Viral Video of the Day: Dave Chappelle Sets the Record Straight... Again

Reclusive comic promoting NYC stand-up shows

A very mellow Dave Chappelle dropped by Late Night with David Letterman Tuesday to promote an upcoming run of stand-up shows at New York's Radio City Music Hall. It was the first time the reclusive comedian had been on any late night talk show in six years, and his first time on Letterman since 2004.

Letterman turned the interview towards the inevitable, asking Chappelle about his 2005 decision to walk away from his hit sketch comedy show Chappelle’s Show, just when it hit its stride, thanks in part to Chappelle’s now-legendary impersonations of R&B icons Rick James and Prince. “Technically, I never quit,” Chappelle told Letterman. “I’m seven years late for work.”

Letterman also grilled Chappelle about walking away from the $50 million paycheck that went with the show, something Chappelle has spoken about in the past. This time, he was more philosophical. “The only difference between having $10 million and $50 million,” Chappelle mused, “is an astounding $40 million!”

Welcome back, Dave. Please stay around this time.
