Stop Whining

Comedians Are Becoming an Endangered Species

A firestorm over a handful of old tweets has got new Daily Show host Trevor Noah in hot water. Why can’t we all grow up and just let comedians be comedians again?

America, I’m sick of you.

I’m sick and tired of your scared, whiny, bullshit fake rage and your pompous-ass attitude.

I’m sick of weakness. I’m sick of wimps. I’m sick and tired of your soft, weak-kneed, oh-I’m-so-offended response to anything that happens today that is quickly turned into an outrage on social media and followed up by the media as if it’s the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Even my man Jesus will say, “Y’all really need to chill. Drink some of this water I turned into wine and stop whining!”

Not even 24 hours after Trevor Noah was tapped on the shoulder by Comedy Central execs to replace the legendary Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show, the whiners-in-chief were out in full force, demanding he apologize and show contrition for some five-year-old tweets. Seriously. The dude sent some tweets out when he was 26, and he’s being raked over the coals like he plagiarized a Pulitzer Prize-winning series (Janet Cooke) or lied about being there when an associate of Lee Harvey Oswald killed himself (Bill O’Reilly).

Trevor Noah should be basking in the afterglow of getting one of the best jobs on television. Instead, he’s likely cooped up with publicists, lawyers, and others trying to deal with the social media storm over several tweets. Yeah, really.

Trevor Noah was offensive! Trevor Noah was insensitive! Trevor Noah talked about fat women! Trevor Noah talked about Jewish people!

Hmmm. Offensive. Insensitive. Blasting folks over their weight and their ethnicity. Gotcha. Sounds like Trevor Noah did what comedians do EVERY DAY!

But this isn’t just about Trevor Noah. Jamie Foxx has been in the comedy game a long time, but when he made a crack about Bruce Jenner at the iHeartAwards, Twitter and social media went to the Pissed Off Zone, ripping Foxx and inspiring stories in numerous mainstream media outlets.

Foxx was ripped because of one Jenner’s daughters was in the audience. But on the Justin Bieber roast on Comedy Central that aired Monday, Kevin Hart made a Bruce Jenner joke, and another of Jenner’s daughters was in there, without the accompanying media storm.

What’s even more amazing to me is that Noah has been called anti-Semitic because of a joke on Twitter about a Jewish kid and driving a German car. Yet master roaster Jeff Ross actually cracked a Holocaust joke at the Bieber roast, and I don’t recall seeing the Anti-Defamation League put out a press release.

But it did about Noah!

Headline: “ADL Wishes Trevor Noah Success on The Daily Show; Urges Him to Ensure the Show Does Not Make Jokes at the Expense of Jews”

Now the ADL release was fairly tame, but still, the fact that it even saw a need to issue a press release seems nuts.

This is the press release I wish the ADL had sent out: “America, grow the hell up!”

When comedians start pulling punches for fear of people acting a plum fool and demanding they get sent to an ISIS camp, then we as a nation will be worse off.

Comedians speak truth. They are outrageous. They say stuff that some of us say deep down inside, but their lack of a filter has us laughing out loud. We get to laugh through our pain. We get to commune as a people, regardless of our race, gender, sexual preference, or politics, through laughing.

If you are afraid of people being mean, telling jokes that are crass and raw, then just put the O’Reilly Killing Jesus movie on repeat. National Geographic will love you a long time.

I’m sure there is a group of comedians in heaven—Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley, George Carlin, Robin Harris, Lenny Bruce—saying, “God, thank you for making sure I wasn’t alive during the 21st century. Those m$%^&r@+?!(~s are too sensitive!”
