It makes more sense than you’d think.

Tomorrow night hundreds of thousands of people will congregate in the unabashed bastion of capitalism that is New York’s Times Square, intent on ushering in the new year by milling about and ultimately watching a giant orb descend from the sky. Millions more will tune in from champagne-drenched parties around the world, sweatily sidling up to whomever they hope to smooch as the clock strikes 12.
