Thieves in Philadelphia made off with 50 boxes of frozen snow crab after raiding a delivery vehicle in the early hours of the morning. The driver of the vehicle told local media he’d fallen asleep when he awoke to find a group of thieves dressed in black unloading boxes containing the 3,000-pound haul of seafood into a pickup truck. “As I was dreaming, I felt the shaking and I [woke] up and I [thought], ‘Uh oh. I have some company,’“ the driver told NBC Philadelphia. He said he initially confronted the thieves but fled after one of the men charged at him. The thieves escaped the scene in multiple vehicles, he said. Police told the media that it’s one of several incidents in which thieves have targeted trucks as the drivers slept while waiting to make early morning deliveries.
Police have expanded their search for an escaped Tennessee murder convict across state lines after his vehicle was found abandoned. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the white pickup truck Jacob Morley was driving after he escaped prison had been found on Tuesday in Marion, Illinois. The TBI said Morley’s whereabouts “remain unknown,” and Illinois State Police had offered to assist in the search for the 28-year-old. Morley escaped prison in Tiptonville, Tennessee, late Sunday after breaching a fence wearing his prison uniform. He stole a truck early Monday. Morley was serving a life sentence on charges including first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, and tampering with evidence. The body of his victim, Cody Birchfield, was reportedly found in a box under Morley’s home. Morley is the second convict in a week to escape prison in Tennessee. The TBI has placed him on its “Most Wanted” list, with a $2,500 reward for information.

Director of Cult Horror Film Dead at 88
Peter Medak directed dozens of films, television episodes, and music videos during his varied career.
Peter Medak, the Hungarian-British director behind the cult horror film The Changeling, has died at 88. No cause of death has been given. The director made 27 films during his six-decade career, including the 1990 movie about 1960s British gangsters The Krays and the acclaimed 2018 documentary The Ghost of Peter Sellers. His 1972 cult classic The Ruling Class earned its star, Peter O’Toole, a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Medak’s directorial debut, 1968’s Negatives, featured British two-time Oscar winner and politician Glenda Jackson in one of her early films. Outside of film, Medak directed dozens of television episodes, including The Wire, Breaking Bad, and Chicago Hope. He also directed music videos for artists such as Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd and staged operas in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. “If it’s in your blood, directing,” he is quoted as saying. “You never stop directing, and it doesn’t matter that you’re alone in your mind, dreaming or imagining things, but you’re always making a movie.” Medak is survived by his children Christopher, Cornelia, Joshua, and Karen, and his grandchildren, Sacha, Marlowe, Ryden, Oliver, and Anders. He was previously married to Katherine La Kermance, Carolyn Seymour, and Julia Migenes.
Lamar Odom is now the first NBA player to join OnlyFans, a subscription-based website mostly known for adult content. The two-time NBA champion for the Los Angeles Lakers promoted the account on his Instagram story, shirtless in a pool, writing, “Let’s chat,” with a water-droplets emoji over his swim shorts. Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Errol Morris is considering releasing a previously unseen two-hour interview with disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. The conversation was filmed in 2015, before a Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that the health technology start-up was misleading investors. Morris, known for directing The Thin Blue Line and The Fog of War, told Variety he was shooting a series of advertisements for Theranos at the time. Public interest in Holmes has surged following the release of the critically acclaimed documentary You Can See Everything, which depicts Holmes’ last days before going to prison. Morris said his interview, filmed while the tech founder was “at the height of her success,” “gives you a comparison of Elizabeth before and after” the scandal. Excerpts from the interview appeared in the 2019 documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, although Morris, 78, said he is unsure of how director Alex Gibney got hold of the footage.
A United Airlines passenger accused of sending a hijacking threat told investigators he had been drinking and intended the message as a joke between coworkers, according to a criminal complaint. Dante Milne, 25, a trainee welder, allegedly texted, “I’m gonna hijack this b---h and crash ur row only,” during Saturday’s Flight 1681 from Las Vegas to Newark, New Jersey. Milne told investigators after his arrest that he’d had a beer and shots before boarding. He initially said he could not remember the messages, but described the hijacking comment as poorly worded “banter between coworkers” when questioned specifically about it, the arrest report said. He denied intending to take over the aircraft and apologized. A flight attendant spotted the message and alerted the captain, prompting the Boeing 737’s return to Las Vegas just 15 minutes after takeoff. Police arrested Milne after landing. The plane, carrying 150 passengers and six crew, was evacuated and inspected, and no one suffered injuries. Milne was charged with one count of making threats or conveying false information concerning an act of terrorism, and posted $10,000 bail. His attorney, James Gallo, told a judge Tuesday that Milne planned to plead not guilty. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 5.

U.S. Cruise Ship Passengers Booted Off Early Thanks to Trump
President Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East has sent fuel prices soaring.
Hundreds of Americans aboard a luxury cruise ship were abruptly stranded halfway across the globe after skyrocketing fuel costs forced the liner to stop operating. The MV Odyssey, operated by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, was originally marketed as a permanent floating home for global travelers willing to spend over $230,000 for a lifetime suite. However, operating losses spiked as monthly per-cabin fuel expenses, tied to Trump’s war of choice in Iran, surged from an average of $1,800 up to $8,000. The ship anchored in Cambodia, where 203 passengers—mostly Americans—and 156 crew members were told the journey was over. “We have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses,” Villa Vie Residences said in a statement on Tuesday. “Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution. Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees.” Despite corporate assurances of assistance, passengers stranded at the Southeast Asian port painted a starkly different picture of the aftermath. “The company has done absolutely nothing to help: we couldn’t even walk out of the port, so there were shuttle buses that dropped us in the middle of town,” blogger and passenger Randy Cassingham posted online. Local authorities reported the ship is expected to refuel before departing Saturday.
Rescuers found the body of a California man on snow-covered Mount Whitney days after he went missing on a hike. The California Highway Patrol deployed a helicopter to search for the man, whose body was found at around 13,600 feet on a path leading to the mountain’s summit. Efforts to recover the body were hampered for days by stormy weather. A helicopter hoisted the body Sunday from the site on Mountaineers Route, a nine-mile path leading to the top of the mountain. Police have not yet identified the man. They said a local motel alerted them that the man was missing after he failed to check out of his room after setting off on his hike. Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States and is 14,505 feet tall. Two hikers have been found dead on the mountain in the past year.
At least 68 people have been killed, and nearly 80 are injured after two high-speed passenger trains collided in Spain. The crash, on the line connecting Madrid to southern Andalusia, unfolded when a train operated by the state-owned firm Renfe and another by private operator Iryo collided. The impact caused multiple carriages on the Iryo service to derail, sending several rolling down a steep roadside embankment in the rural countryside near Toledo. A total of 544 passengers were on board the two trains at the time of the impact, including 397 on the Renfe train and 147 on the Iryo service. Emergency medical responders rushed to the scene as local officials scrambled to convert public facilities into triage centers. “I have been asked by emergency services to prepare a sports hall to accommodate the injured,” Manuel Galán, mayor of the nearby municipality of Urda, reported. Regional government spokesperson Esther Padilla warned that the fatality count is expected to rise as search and rescue teams sift through the twisted wreckage. Spain’s Health Minister Mónica García added that images from the scene make clear the nation is facing “a major tragedy.”
