PayPal will no longer work with WikiLeaks because it violates their company policy, the money-exchange service announced Friday. A PayPal blog post said that their clients cannot use their services for “any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate, or instruct others to engage in illegal activity." This recent blow to WikiLeaks means the website is without its most secure connection for donations. While WikiLeaks has several outlets to receive money, including a post-office box in Australia, and bank transfers in Switzerland, their PayPal account was the most convenient. Money donated through PayPal went to a German organization called The Wau Holland Foundation, which had thus far raised $1 million for WikiLeaks.
