Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) has reportedly survived her surgery after being shot in the head during a public event at a Safeway grocery store in Tucson on Saturday. A trauma surgeon says he is " optimistic" about her chances. Earlier reports indicated she and six others had been killed. Eighteen people were reportedly injured. Giffords, 40, was holding her first "Congress on Your Corner" event when a gunman, reportedly in his teens or early 20s, rushed the group and began shooting. Giffords was then rushed to the nearby University Medical Center. According to witnesses, Giffords was talking to a couple when the man began firing indiscriminately. He ran off, but was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody. The congresswoman was elected to her third term in November.
