Apple's review of its international labor conditions revealed that 137 employees at a Chinese factory had been sickened by a chemical used to make the iPhone's glass screens. Apple said it was a "core violation" of policy and ordered the contractor to stop using the chemical. But interviews reveal that the injured employees never heard from Apple, and instead that the Taiwanese contractor working for the company had pressured them to resign and offered cash settlements to keep them quiet. The company, Wintek, denied the charges, and workers said the company had backed off of requiring them to sign waivers absolving the company of blame.
