Obama: Gaddafi Should Leave ‘Now’

In his strongest words yet against Libya’s tyrannical ruler, President Obama said Muammar Gaddafi “needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now.” Obama’s remarks were recorded in a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Gaddafi “has lost the legitimacy to rule,” Obama told Merkel. His remarks come as the embattled ruler is escalating his battle against protesters, who have claimed control of much of Libya’s eastern regions. Witnesses say Gaddafi’s loyalist forces have been terrorizing citizens—even shooting out of ambulances.
