Texas Senate Postpones Campus Gun Bill

The Texas Senate Thursday delayed voting on a bill that would have prohibited colleges from banning guns on campus. The postponement came as a surprise for many, as the bill was once considered a slam-dunk as recently as last month—but the bill did not have the two-thirds majority needed for discussion. Gun control advocates hoped Thursday’s postponement would kill the bill forever, but supporters said the delay is a mere hiccup and they would rewrite it to fit some lawmakers’ concerns. Utah has already passed a similar law, but the Texas bill was met with considerable hostility from university presidents—especially considering a 2008 shooting at a San Antonio community college.
