John Ensign can run from the Senate, but he can’t hide from serious ethics violations. The Nevada Republican resigned his post last week, but a Senate Ethics Committee report Thursday said there is “substantial credible evidence” that he “violated Senate rules and federal civil and criminal laws, and engaged in improper conduct reflecting upon the Senate.” What’s more, the report suggested that the violations might be worthy of investigation by the Department of Justice. The committee was looking into events after Ensign admitted to an affair with the wife of a former aide when the senator reportedly ignored a legally mandated “cooling off” period in an attempt to get the aide a lobbying job. His parents also gave the aide nearly $100,000.
