U.S. Ramps Up Secret Yemen Strikes

The U.S. has been intensifying airstrikes in a covert war in Yemen, U.S. officials say, in order to root out al Qaeda militants amid an expanding power vacuum. Officials said the Pentagon’s Joint Special Operations Command—in close connection with the CIA—has been carrying out drone strikes since the Yemeni army was forced to pull back in its fight against al Qaeda militants and devote resources to dealing with protesters in the capital. The White House is reportedly worried that the mingling of al Qaeda militants with other anti-government rebels could sweep al Qaeda into power.
