Ahmad Wali Karzai, the half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, was killed Tuesday in an apparent attack by one of his own bodyguards. “My younger brother was martyred in his house today,” Hamid Karzai said in a news conference. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack on Ahmad, one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan. He led Kandahar’s provincial council and used his money and connections to consolidate power. He was also previously accused of ties to Afghanistan’s opium trade.
