Sen. Patty Murray motions to a reporter to ask a question during a news conference following a visit to the headquarters of Amazon.com Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, in Seattle. On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid named Murray, as well as Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Max Baucus, D-Mont., to a powerful new committee tasked to find a bipartisan plan to slash the federal budget deficit.

They’ll have a lot to do. The so-called supercommittee on deficit reduction will hold its first meeting on Thursday. Co-chairs Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) said they’ll also hold their initial public hearing on Sept. 13. The newly formed bipartisan congressional group has been tasked to slash at least $1.2 trillion from the federal budget over the next decade before a Nov. 23 deadline.
