The heir to the Saudi throne has died in New York after an illnness. Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdel Aziz, 85, was next in line for the throne after the ailing King Abdullah. He had been receiving treatment for colon cancer since 2009. The most likely heir now is Prince Nayef, the minister in charge of the country's internal security forces. Nayef is believed to be closer to Saudi clerics and less a proponent of modernization than Sultan was.
