Former Saturday Night Live cast member Darrell Hammond was beloved for his impressions of Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, and others. Backstage, however, he was barely holding it together. In a new memoir, Hammond says he drank heavily, and “when drinking didn’t work, I cut myself.” He says in 1998 cops took him to the NBC infirmary in a straitjacket, and he was not even able to recognize his wife. By 2002, he was using cocaine and, in 2009, he started smoking crack. Hammond got clean and opened an acclaimed one-man show in Sag Harbor, N.Y., but it was cut short after he was in a car accident.
