    Scientists Unveil HIV-Blocking Gel

    Another huge breakthrough in the worldwide effort to cure and prevent the spread of HIV: UCLA scientists announced Monday that they had completed a successful trial run of a “topically applied microbicide gel” that blocks the virus that causes AIDS. The gel, called UC781, was found to “significantly reduce infection when applied to rectal tissue that was subsequently exposed to HIV in the laboratory,” and was also declared “safe and acceptable to users.” UCLA scientists previously had success with a similar drug called Tenofovir, but uncomfortable side effects reported by study participants prevented it from being a huge hit.
