Japan Bans Fukushima Rice

Rice produced near the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan has tested positive for radioactive contamination, and on Thursday the country announced a ban on the staple from the region. Tests show that the radioactive element cesium in rice from the area was above the government’s safety limit. "This restriction won't be lifted until safety of the rice produced in the area can be confirmed," the agricultural ministry said. The ban will affect 154 farms that produced 192 tons of rice this year. The Fukushima Daiichi plant was damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
