These days, having a mansion just isn’t enough. The new trend among millionaire homeowners is to have a mansion-size basement within their mansion. Proof that underground mansions are the hot new thing for America’s wealthiest? Mitt Romney’s in the process of building one! A new Wall Street Journal style piece references Romney’s own mansion—which is four times the size of the old mansion he tore down to build it. The new house will include a 3,600-square-foot basement. Just for some perspective—this basement will be 600 square feet bigger than the entire house he tore down. An architect quoted in the story says clients want to be discreet about the size of their homes, and one way to do that is “by pushing some things underground.”
