Massive WWII Bomb Found in Marseille

France’s second largest city is on alert Sunday after an unexploded one-ton bomb from the Second World War was discovered nearby. Boat access has been suspended as well as roads along the coast as officials work to remove the massive explosive and transport it to a location where it can be safely detonated. The bomb, which was apparently buried by German soldiers evacuating the city, perhaps in a thwarted attempt to destroy its port, lay dormant until a week ago when a construction crew accidentally uncovered it with their back hoe. The bomb’s ignition system is said to be out of commission, but the fact that it contains 1,400 pounds of explosives makes the job a touchy one none the less.
