Turns out Rafael Nadal won’t be carrying the Spanish flag at the Olympics opening ceremony. Weeks after handing over his world-champion title to Roger Federer, Nadal issued a statement on Thursday saying he’s “not in condition” to compete in London. Nadal, 26, has been fighting to recover from a knee injury since the French Open in hopes that he would be able to defend the title he won in the 2008 Beijing Games. In his statement, Nadal said pulling out was one of the saddest moments of his career. The Spaniard hasn’t been on the court since he was eliminated in the second round of Wimbledon, losing to then 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol.
