Sam Bacile, the filmmaker behind the anti-Islam film that sparked a violent backlash might not be Israeli or Jewish, as was thought, and may be working under a pseudonym. He is, however, reportedly in hiding. A source that spoke to The Atlantic said, “I would suspect this is a disinformation campaign.” The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other American staff members were killed in the attacks, while protesters in Egypt stormed the U.S. Embassy and replaced its American flag with an Islamic banner. The filmmaker defended his anti-Muhammad movie in a phone interview with the Associated Press on Tuesday, calling Islam a “cancer” and explaining that Innocence of Muslims, which he wrote and directed, is meant to be a political statement condemning the religion.
