McConnell Snubs Akin

Guess Mitch McConnell wasn’t swayed by Newt Gingrich’s support for Todd Akin. The Senate Majority leader stopped in St. Louis on Wednesday, but did not meet with Akin, who is running against fellow Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill for her seat. Akin has been generally shunned by Republicans after claiming last month that pregnancy on occurs in cases of “legitimate rape,” although Akin has managed to survive without the mainstream GOP past the final deadline to drop out of the race on Tuesday. Republicans tried to make nice with Akin this week, with even the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee—which pulled funding from Akin—saying Akin is a “far more preferable candidate” than McCaskill.
