Former Algerian President Dies
Former Algerian President Chadli Ben Jadid died on Saturday. He served as president from 1979 to ’92, during which he passed increasingly liberal policies, reducing the government’s role in the economy and easing government surveillance of citizens. The policies eventually led to massive rioting in 1988 and an Islamic Salvation Front victory in the 1991 elections.
