    White House: Immigration Plan Is Backup

    Settle down, GOP. The immigration proposal that leaked this weekend is just a backup in case Congress is unable to agree on bipartisan legislation, a White House official said Monday. “The administration will be ready to move forward in the event the bipartisan process gets bogged down and is not able to produce a bill,” the official said. Republicans wasted no time in bashing the draft in the press when it was leaked, with Sen. Marco Rubio announcing it would be “dead on arrival.” The proposal would allow immigrants to become permanent residents within eight years, require employers to check the immigration status of workers, and provide more border-security funding.
