South Africa’s anti-apartheid crusader and first black president was admitted to the hospital late Wednesday night due to a persistent lung infection, according to government officials. A statement released by the office of President Jacob Zuma urged the people of South Africa to pray for “Madiba” (his clan name) while assuring them that great care was being taken to keep him comfortable. “Doctors are attending to him, ensuring that he has the best possible expert medical treatment and comfort,” the statement reads. The hospitalization is the third in four months for 94-year-old Mandela, who spent one night hospitalized in March and three weeks in December for a lung infection and gallstones.
