The folks at the White House budget office have their abacus faces out. After doing some sliding around, they've figured out that $5 billion of the scheduled $85 billion in automatic sequestration cuts can be restored. That frees up an estimated $4 billion for the Pentagon and $1 billion to be used by the Homeland Security Department and NASA. With $80 billion in spending cuts still set to take effect—and starting to be imposed already—Congress is facing dire warnings from agencies over the negative effects of budget slashing.
