Disney's highly anticipated The Lone Ranger had a disappointing opening weekend, taking in only $48.8 million during its first five days in theaters. Analysts had expected the movie, which cost $225 million to make, to gross twice as much. Despicable Me 2 won the box-office brawl, raking in $142.1 million over the holiday weekend and setting a new record for animated films, according to studio estimates. The buddy-cop movie The Heat starring Melissa McCarthy was third with $25 million. Monsters University came in fourth with $19.6 million.
