Ms. Marvel is back, but she doesn’t look like your mom’s comic-book heroine. Karmala Khan will be the new Ms. Marvel, the comic-book series announced on Tuesday. Instead of being the Ms. Marvel of the 1960s (blonde, blue-eyed former U.S. Air Force officer), Khan is the 16-year-old daughter of Pakistani immigrants who can shrink and grow her body to fit different shapes. Khan is the first Muslim lead character in a Marvel comic-book series, and the series’s new writers and editors say they hope she will shed stereotypes.
