Former Christie campaign manager Bill Stepien has refused to comply with a subpoena from the New Jersey committee investigating last September’s George Washington Bridge closure. On Tuesday, his deadline to respond to the subpoena, Stepien’s lawyer claimed that protections in the Constitution against self-incrimination and unreasonable searches protected him. “I can think of no lawful way the committee can obtain documents responsive to its subpoena from Mr. Stepien,” his attorney Kevin Marino wrote. “His principled objections to the subpoena raise significant legal issues that are no less valid because they here arise in the context of a politically-charged investigation.” Bridget Anne Kelly, Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, also had the same deadline to respond but stood by her initial Feb. 3 letter stating her refusal to comply.
