An emotional six-day family reunion began Thursday in a rare sign of cooperation between North and South Korea. South Koreans that had been separated from loved ones since the Korean War, over 60 years ago, met for the first time at a resort in North Korea. In three days, there will be a second reunion, with North Koreans traveling to South Korea. In the first group, 82 South Koreans were chosen by lottery from a list more than 70,000-people long. Their average age was 84. Despite the happy event, this week’s United Nations’ report on North Korea’s serious human-rights violations reflects how deeply abusive the isolated country remains.
