California gubernatorial candidate Glenn Champ may not have a lot of experience in politics, but he believes his extensive criminal history makes him more than equipped to deal with politicians. Champ is a registered sex offender who spent more than 10 years in state prison, convicted of assault with intent to commit rape and voluntary manslaughter. Among the other crimes on his lengthy rap sheet are carrying a concealed firearm and loitering to solicit a prostitute. The 48-year-old Republican did not directly address his criminal past when he spoke to the California GOP at a recent event with the party’s other gubernatorial candidates. But he did acknowledge his record in a later interview, after it was reported by Fresno’s KMJ radio. “I found the Lord when I got arrested for picking up the prostitutes,” he said. He called the voluntary manslaughter case, in which he pleaded no contest after hitting a man with his car, a “tragic accident.”
