On Monday, a 21-year-old Pennsylvania tree cutter James Valentine ended up with a chainsaw blade far into his neck and shoulder—just a centimeter away from a vital artery—when his chainsaw kicked back while cutting a pine tree. Thanks to a quick response by fellow workers, who removed the motor from the blade, but left the blade and chain in place, he's now in stable condition with 30 stitches at a Pittsburgh hospital. Continuing his lucky streak, most of the injuries Valentine had were to muscles and soft tissue around his shoulder, and not damage to his spinal cord, esophagus, or the airway. As of Tuesday, his sister said, “He looks more like himself, he’s walking and talking today. We can’t believe it at all.”
