Man Fined $525 Over $0.89 Refill

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 13: A 32-ounce soda is filled at a Manhattan McDonalds on September 13, 2012 in New York City. In an effort to combat obesity, the New York City Board of Health voted to ban the sale of large sugary drinks. A man who didn't pay for a drink refill is out $525 and a job. Christopher Lewis, an on-site construction worker at a South Carolina Veterans Administration hospital, was stopped by a policeman who issued a federal fine for shoplifting and kicked off the premises after he took a drink refill without realizing he had to pay. "Every time I look at the ticket, it's unbelievable to me,” says Lewis. “I can't fathom the fact that I made a $0.89 mistake that cost me $525." Lewis will contest the fine in federal court.
