It looks like Fox is the next major network to hop on the live musical production bandwagon. On Monday, it announced that it was planning a three-hour live broadcast of Grease for 2015. Fox hasn’t revealed the names of anyone in the cast yet, though Fox Senior VP Shana C. Waterman stressed the production will have “star power”—so, probably no unknown ingénues. Fox’s move looks like it was inspired by NBC’s own live production of The Sound of Music in 2013. Despite the fact that NBC’s The Sound of Music Live earned pretty damning reviews from critics, the network killed it when it came to ratings. NBC also strategically released a DVD and soundtrack for the holiday season, suggesting a new overall pattern for networks to monetize live musical productions.
