Gawker reports that popular Fox News anchor Shepard Smith approached network President Roger Ailes last summer about coming out of the closet. "It's time," Smith reportedly told Ailes and colleagues several weeks after he brought his boyfriend to a summer retreat at Ailes's home. However, Ailes allegedly told Smith he could not come out because the network's conservative audience would not put up with a gay anchor. Ailes and Smith said in a joint statement the story is “100% false and a complete fabrication. As colleagues and close friends at Fox News for 18 years, our relationship has always been rooted in a mutual respect, deep admiration, loyalty, trust, and full support both professionally and personally.”
