Despite international outcry, Brunei became the first East Asian country to adopt Sharia law on Wednesday. The announcement was made during a ceremony by the sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, who leads the oil-rich kingdom on the island of Borneo. The new Islamic criminal law will include punishments like flogging, dismemberment, and stoning for crimes including adultery, rape, and sodomy. The new law will affect both Muslims and non-Muslims in the country of 412,000 people.
