GOP Rep. Brings Fake Joint to Hearing

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., a senior Republican on the House Oversight Committee, argues that Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner forfeited her right to invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions when she appeared before the panel last month, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Friday, June 28, 2013. Mica said "Lois Lerner is in fact a poster child for a federal bureaucrat thumbing her nose at Congress." Lerner, the IRS supervisor who headed the tax-exempt division, appeared before the Republican-controlled panel with her attorney May 22 but cited her constitutional right to not answer questions and left after a dramatic standoff. Rep. John Mica wanted to make sure nobody ever mistook a congressional hearing for a drug den, as he brought a fake joint to a House oversight hearing on Friday. "I have this joint here," Mica said. "Don't get too excited out there, some of you, this is not a real one, it's a mock one." The hearing was regarding Washington, D.C.'s new law decriminalizing marijuana possession, given Congress still has oversight over the district's laws. Mica, who opposes legalization, said he will not work to stop decriminalization in D.C.
