Two SUVs drove into an open market at 7:50 a.m. on Thursday in Urumqi, a city in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, causing a series of explosions that have left 31 dead and at least 90 more wounded. According to the official Chinese news agency, explosives were thrown out of the vehicles before one of them exploded. This attack comes less than a month after an explosion at a train station in Urumqi, and after a mass knife attack in March that left 29 dead in the Xinjiang region. President Xi Jinping vowed the terrorists would be “severely” punished, and the ministry of public security called the bombing “a serious violent terrorist incident.”
