Nine Hurt in Bourbon Street Shooting

Nine people were injured when gunfire erupted on the iconic Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans' French quarter early Sunday morning. Police say seven of the victims are stable, but one is in critical condition and another's status is unknown. The violence apparently started after one man got into a fight with another, shot him, and then opened fire on a crowd. “He seemed pissed off at some dude, pulled the gun out and started shooting at the guy then turned around on the crowd and started shooting at us,” a witness told a local news station. New Orleans has historically struggled with gun violence, and there were shootings on Bourbon Street as recently as February 2013. New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu stressed his commitment to fighitng violent crime in the city.  “Every life is precious - from the 9th Ward to the French Quarter,” he said. “We will not rest until every corner of this city is safe.”
